When we say that works "fall into the public domain," it sounds like some sort of abyss -- a place for useless detritus.
I prefer the vocabulary used by Jim Robertson, smart person and Assistant University Librarian at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He says that works "graduate into the public domain." This confers a status that all works can aspire to ... and better denotes the promotion of progress, of which the public domain is an essential part.
