Elizabeth Burns has a very interesting article in the 15 July issue of Library Journal on ELF and other attempts to make library ciruclation records more accessible to patrons. She is concerned about what happens when "the long-held tradition of patron record privacy is violated by patrons themselves." Mary Minow's analyses of ELF are cited in the article, as is Paul Neuhaus's page on "Digital Reference and Privacy."
Burns doesn't have any answers, but it is a good summary of some of the policy questions involved as we try to balance privacy and convenience.
